ArtmewinTM aims to support biliary system functions and thus promote human health. Biliary system consists of liver, gall bladder and several ducts, that work in concert to promote health. Bile is produced by liver, it is secreted and then transported from the liver into the biliary tract for storage in the gall bladder. The biliary tract is a system of ducts which carry bile from the liver to the gall bladder and the intestines. There are thousands of bile capillaries inside the liver which join like the twigs and branches of a tree to form two large ducts outside the liver, the left hepatic duct and the right hepatic duct. These two ducts unite to form the common hepatic duct, which joins the cystic duct from the gallbladder to form the common bile duct. The common bile duct merges with the pancreatic
duct just before entering the duodenum at the sphincter of Oddi. Any derangement in the formation and transport of bile produces biliary sludge, that can cause gall bladder stones, thus impairing greatly the functions of bile capillaries, gall blader, liver, intestinal tract and pancrea. These impediments are additionally compounded, especially in case of the back suction of the bile into the pancreas. Thus increase in the concentration of bile in the liver, is potently cytotoxic and induces insulin resistance, hepatic injury, fibrosis or cirrhosis of the liver. A negative feed back mechanism characterized by transcription factor farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is in place to shut down the biosynthesis of bile acids, and promotes their export from the liver { Oleanolic Acid is a selective Farnesoid X receptor modulator, see Phytotherapy Research, 24: 369-373 (2010)}. ArtmewinTM is a novel preparation consisting of the potent hepatoprotective extracts of Paeonia lactiflora, Lycium chinensis and the superb anti-oxidant Ferulic acid as well the three ingredients of a famous Kampo medicine called Inchinko-to (Yinchenhao Tang in Chinese traditional Medcine). Inchinko-to contains active ingredients of Artemisia cappillaris, Gardenia jasminoiodes and Rheum officinale and
eliminates internal damp heat, blood stasis, Qi and Yin asthenia (weakness, lack of energy and strength) and has been widely used as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and as a cholerectic, because it increases bile flow and biliary excretion of bilirubin conjugates. This possibly includes even liver patients with biliary obstruction due to bile duct?carcinoma ( Hepatology Research, vol 39, pp 247-255(2009). These effects are associated with enhanced multi-drug resistance-associated protein 2 (Mrp2/MRP2) and the anti-oxidant action of a nuclear factor-E2-related factor (Nrf2)-dependent mechanisms {Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiology, vol 292, pp G1450-G1463 (2007)}. In addition Inchinko-to has been used for treating jaundice, and management of chronic liver hepatitis and liver cirrhosis {Chinese Medicine, Vol 3: pp1(2008)}. Inchinko-to also exerts many beneficial effects in the rat liver under stress with hepatic ischemia-reperfusion and subsequent hepatectomy { Annals of Surgery, Vol 251(4), 692 (2010)}. Amelioration of hepatic fibrosis in a bile duct ligated rats (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, vol 10, pp 318-324 (2007) and alleviation of hepatic oxidative stress by Yinchenhao Tang in obese mice with steatosis (International Journal of Molecular Medicine, Vol 25, pp 837-844 (2010) has also been demonstrated. Obesity is an inflammatory disease that increases the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFa, decreases the vital adipokine adiponectin, and serves as a storage depot of excess white adipose tissue. With ?overspills? of lipids to non-adipose insulin-sensitive tissues, e.g., pancreatic beta-cells, liver, skeletal muscle and brain, insulin fails to suppress lipolysis, fatty acids levels increase, and chronic inflammation remains unabated. This leads to all the complications of Type 2 diabetes {For inflammatory links between obesity and metabolic disease, see: Journal of Clinical Investigation, Vol. 121(6), pp2111-2117 (2011).
